Cable Routing & Risk Assessment

Cable Routing And Risk Assessment

Using a multidisciplinary ground model approach and in‑house probabilistic modelling, Geo-4D can perform effective cable routing, risk and burial assessments.

Geo-4D can assist cable projects at various stages:

  • Initial cable routing desktop studies.

  • Geophysical, geotechnical and UXO survey specification, and scopes of work.

  • Survey management and near-real-time data QC.

  • Survey data processing, interpretation and charting.

  • Geotechnical zonation and engineering parameter derivation.

  • Probabilistic anchor strike risk assessment and recommended depth of lowering.

  • Cable burial assessment surveys.

Geo-4D work extensively on submarine cable projects, with an in-depth understanding of the key risks and constraints to cable routing, installation and ongoing asset integrity, along with extensive knowledge of how best to characterise and quantify such risks and uncertainties.

Geo-4D has developed an in-house probabilistic anchor strike model that utilises the ground model approach to derive the required input parameters, along with custom in-house developed software code to conduct the risk analyses. The anchor strike risk model is based on published guidelines, with additional model refinements to produce more robust model outputs. The model is configured to work in two ways:

1. Recommended depth of lowering mode: For proposed cable installation, the ground model-derived parameters are fed into our bespoke anchor strike risk model to calculate anchor strike return periods and advise suitable minimum depth of lowering and installation methodologies.

2. Post-lay risk monitoring mode: For installed cables, the model analyses as-surveyed cable information to output present-day anchor strike risk and distribution of risk. Results are used to identify areas of heightened risk, enabling remedial action to be undertaken before potential cable damage occurs. The risk model is updated each time a monitoring survey is performed to understand how risk is changing over time.
