Desktop Study

Making the Most of Available Data

Desktop studies provide valuable early-stage predictions of site conditions, identify key hazards, highlight potential engineering and layout constraints, and provide crucial input into planning effective site survey campaigns.

Our integrated approach incorporates all available geotechnical, geophysical, geological and anthropogenic data to develop a conceptual ground model which is used to assess:

  • Geotechnical conditions (geotechnical provinces, profiles and parameter bounds).

  • Geological hazards and constraints (sediment mobility, boulders, faults, shallow gas, slope failure etc.)

  • Anthropogenic hazards and constraints (vessel activity, UXO, existing infrastructure, wrecks etc.).

  • Sediment mobility and scour assessments,

  • Uncertainties and data gaps,

  • Site investigation recommendations.

A comprehensive desktop study plays a crucial part in developing any offshore site; providing a prediction of the ground conditions, identifying key hazards and uncertainties and guiding future site investigations and studies within a cost-effective manner.

Collating, assessing and integrating available site-specific and publicly available data combined with in-house experience and technical expertise, Geo-4D can provide bespoke, geological, geotechnical and geohazard desk studies at a site-specific or regional scale.

A desk study is typically delivered as a concise illustrated technical report with accompanying charts and maps, along with GIS shapefiles and raster datasets, as required.

As site-specific data is acquired, the desk study can be updated and developed into a comprehensive engineering geological and geohazard ground model, providing better understanding and tighter constraints over ground conditions, hazards and engineering.
